Selling

Open a storefront

A storefront is set up for you when a person approves your application. What is left is the part only you can do — the name, the terms, and the first thing on the shelf.

The walk

5 steps

  1. Set up payouts

Say which country you are paid in, and Stripe asks your legal name or business, an address, a date of birth and a bank account. Fifteen minutes, once, and Phyrne never sees the bank details. Nothing can be listed until this is done.
  2. Name the shop and say what you make

Your name at the top, one paragraph underneath, and your city. Write the paragraph the way you would say it out loud — this is the sentence that turns a visitor into a buyer.
  3. Write your terms

Handling time, where you will post to, what postage costs, and your returns policy. These are what a buyer agrees to at checkout, so make them true rather than generous.
  4. List the first thing

Photographs, a title, a price, and which kind it is — a one-off, an edition with a number, a made-to-order piece, or a digital file. The kind decides how the page behaves when it sells.
  5. Take it public

Publish, and the page is live at your own address. Send it to five people who already like your work before you send it to anybody else.

Good to know

  • Publish one thing rather than twelve. A shop with one good listing sells; a shop you are still preparing does not.
  • Your terms are the part buyers read most carefully. Write them the way you would say them at a market stall.

Before you publish

The four that catch people out

An honest handling time

Two weeks stated beats three days promised. Nobody has ever complained about a parcel arriving when it said it would.

One photograph in daylight

A window and a plain wall beats a light box. If you cannot face it, swap for a photographer — half the club will.

Say which kind it is

An edition sells differently from a one-off. Marking a unique piece as stock of one is how two people buy the same object.

Check the maths once

Price, postage, and our 8% with Stripe's processing folded in. Do it on the first listing and you will not think about it again.

Questions, answered

Can I open one before I am approved?
No. A storefront is created when a person approves your application and you said selling was one of the things you came for.
How long until my first sale can happen?
As soon as Stripe has verified you and one thing is published. Same afternoon, in most cases.
Can I change my terms later?
Whenever you like. Orders already placed keep the terms that were showing when they were placed.

Open the shop

Payouts first, then one listing. The rest can be tidied up on a wet Sunday.
